Common Pet Surgeries at St. Norbert Animal Hospital
Whether it's from an accident, an illness, or a simple part of life, it's likely that your pet will need to undergo one of many common pet surgeries sometime during its life.
At St. Norbert Animal Hospital our vet in Winnipeg, along with our dedicated veterinary team, is ready to care for your pet during whatever surgical procedures they need. We know that leaving your pet with us can cause concerns, but our caring team will work to make sure your pet's stay with us is as stress and pain-free as possible.
Pet Emergencies That Require Surgery
Not every pet surgery is an unplanned one, but pet emergencies that require surgery make up a good percentage of procedures that we do in our Winnipeg animal hospital. Some of the most common are broken bones and internal injuries from auto accidents and falls, bites, and lacerations from fights with other animals, and even C-sections for pregnant dogs and cats that are having trouble with labor.
One of the most common pet surgeries in our office is dental surgery. It's important that you keep up with your pet's oral hygiene on a regular basis to prevent tooth decay. Broken or rotted teeth make up a large portion of our surgical schedule, since leaving these teeth in place can encourage bacteria to grow and cause infections.
The most common surgery in any pet's life is likely to be spaying or neutering. Our veterinarian in Winnipeg recommends that all our pet patients be spayed or neutered as early as possible. Puppies and kittens can be sterilized as early as eight weeks in most cases, but all animals can safely go through the procedure.
Another common reason for surgeries is skin surgery. Lumps, bumps, and tumors happen frequently with pets, especially as they age. Removing tumors to find out if they're benign or malignant is an important procedure as soon as the lumps are discovered.
