Core Vaccinations From Your Winnipeg VeterinarianCat & Dog Vaccinations

Pets depend on their owners to provide the veterinary care they need to ensure good health and to prevent disease. A number of common illnesses are easily transmitted from one animal to another, in saliva or other secretions. Pet vaccinations in Winnipeg help to ensure your pet does not catch these diseases and also help to reduce the veterinary expense that would result from the necessity of treating these illnesses. Your vet in Winnipeg can advise you on types of vaccines necessary to protect your pet against common infectious diseases.

Recommended Dog Vaccinations

Puppy shots are given distemper-adenovirus-parainfluenza-parvovirus combination vaccines (DAPP) over a period of weeks, from the age of 8 weeks. Booster vaccinations are then repeated at 12 weeks and 16 weeks. Puppies can safely receive the rabies vaccine when they reach 16 weeks of age. Bordetella vaccine is recommended for puppies that will be boarded or have frequent contact with other dogs. Lyme disease vaccine may also be needed, depending on the puppy’s exposure. Adult dogs are given DAPP vaccinations every 1 to 3 years, depending on the type of vaccine. Rabies vaccine is also given every 1 to 3 years. Bordetella vaccine is recommended for dogs that are boarded while owners are away. Your vet can advise you on whether Lyme disease vaccine is needed for your dog.

Recommended Cat Vaccinations

Kitten shots are generally provided over a period of months, with the first round of feline distemper and upper respiratory vaccines (FVRCP) at 8 weeks, another at 12 weeks and the final round at 16 weeks. Feline leukemia vaccine (FeLV) is an optional vaccine that is given in 2 doses at 4-week intervals. Rabies vaccine is not given until 16 weeks of age. Adult cats are given FVRCP booster shots every 1 to 3 years, depending on the type of vaccine. Rabies vaccines are also given every 1 to 3 years. Your veterinarian in Winnipeg can advise you on whether your cat is at risk for feline leukemia. If you have any questions about the necessity or safety of pet shots in Winnipeg, your vet can provide answers for you.
